Public Speaking Anxiety
University Communications Director
“I have completely conquered my fear of public speaking. I even managed to deliver a Best Man’s speech with confidence and ease!”
Public Speaking Anxiety, (also known as fear of public speaking), is surprisingly common. For many sufferers, this isn’t actually a phobia it is really a specific form of social anxiety. It can occur in many situations such as a wedding speech, a business presentation, speaking up at meetings, even talking in front of your friends.
It can be so intense that even the thought of it can bring on the symptoms. As talking is a major form of communication, this can be a debilitating and isolating fear. It is important to find a therapy which takes you past your fears and anxieties, allowing you to move on and live a happy, rewarding, fulfilling life.
Every sufferer experiences fear of public speaking in their own unique way. As an evidence based therapy, Cognitive Hypnotherapy is the ideal therapy to help you find your own way forward. Each appointment is bespoke and entirely tailored to your own individual needs.
What Are the Symptoms?
Symptoms can vary and every sufferer experiences their fear differently. Essentially, your Unconscious Mind is interpreting something about talking in front of others as being dangerous. Even though the fear can feel very real, you may not be consciously aware of what’s triggering it.
Symptoms express themselves in different ways, ranging from panic, nausea, sweating, breathlessness, through to a shaking voice, blushing, mental blanks, inability to remember even simple words, in fact anything that makes you want to stop. Your Unconscious Mind is trying to keep you safe by convincing you either to get out of there or even not turn up at all.
What Causes Public Speaking Anxiety?
This varies between individuals but often stems from underlying anxieties. These can be to do with self-esteem, worry about making mistakes in front of your peers, being uncomfortable as the centre of attention, anxiety about being judged and many others.
